The project „It is all about the wine…“ discusses the reconstruction and the architectural enlargement of the winery Mrs Aly Duhr and sons, located in Luxemburg. The initial idea for the project came from the son, Max Duhr, who himself is partly the owner and operator of the winery.

He had the vision to reconstruct the building and enlarge the business with several new facilities so that it becomes more modern and twice the size. According to the architectural enlargement, a new facility for visitors to spend the night will be adjoined. Not only will visitors be able to rest on the estate, they will also enjoy the pleasure of a guided tour of degustation of the winery’s finest wines. Moreover, 2-3 buildings are planned to give additional space to the operators and at the same time can be used as banquet facilities.  The architectural design of the project will show a strong link to the characteristics of the vineyards, especially the correlation between the selection of the grapes, the production of the wine and the finish with the bottling of the finished wine.

The major challenges of the project seem to be the steep hillside of the winery, and the limited construction area for an enlargement of the business. Nonetheless, due to a big interest in the wine sector and as a friend, I agreed to his offer and accepted the challenge.

It is all about the wine ...

After an elaborately analysis about the production process of wine, I started the urbanistic analysis about the site and the road transport infrastructure.
I devided my area into 3 parts; the private part, contains the housing, the semipublic, includes the wine bar and wine tasting and finally the third part, the wine production. After putting them into an effective order, I started to find my form, among the motto form follows function.

The facade concept stays in a direct correlation with the climate and the wine production process. The grape gathering and at the same time the production start is in autumn.
Due to the fall of leaves, guests are allowed to see true the facade into the production area and are able to follow and to understand the process.
In spring and summer these facilities are often in a rest period and are used as well as storage rooms. The facade becomes an overgrown shelter and prohibits to see into a storage facility.
